Taking insulin if sick and not eating as much

Do I stop taking insulin alltogether if I am sick and not eating as much as I am used to
  • Samuel Grossman, BS Pharm, Pharm.D, CDE PROFESSIONAL
When you are sick you should always take your long acting insulin at the same dose as recommended because the dose does not depend on meals. The dose of meal time insulin should depend on your fingersticks before the meal. Blood sugar levels in the body can still be high eventhough you do not eat as much as you are used to. When you are sick, drinking fluids is very important. You can drink soup broth or even regular soda or eat jello to maintain supply of energy. The adjustment in the dose of insulin during sick days should be discussed with your provider
