Injecting one dose of insulin right after another dose of insulin

Is it safe to inject insulin within 15 minutes of a snack in addition to another insulin injection 1-2 hours later before a meal
  • Samuel Grossman, BS Pharm, Pharm.D, CDE PROFESSIONAL
Injecting insulin within 1 to 2 hours of another insulin dose may lead to increase concentration of insulin in the blood which will ultimately may put you at risk for low blood glucose levels. Consult with your provider about how much insulin should be injected before a snack. For small snacks that contain small amount of carbohydrates, there may not be a need for an insulin injection. However, if an insulin dose is needed right before a snack, make sure it is spaced by more than 2 hours away from another dose of insulin. Discuss the insulin dose schedule with your provider. The later dose of insulin may be reduced to account for the potential risk for hypoglycemia.
