NPH insulin is not better or worse than other insulin products and some patients may or may not benefit from this type of insulin. NPH insulin duration of action is shorter than other long acting or basal insulin products. Using NPH insulin has shown in different studies to put patients at risk for low blood sugar at night for some patients, and it has to be injected at least twice daily to get a good insulin coverage during the day. Some of my patients are able to control their blood sugar on NPH insulin and other patients cannot. I would recommend to consult with your provider on which insulin product is appropriate for you.
