Self Care

First Day
Yesterday I found out that I am diabetic. I am so confused on what to do, but today I decided the first step is start exercising. Since it has stop snowing the sun is out and the temps are about 40 degrees I am going to go for a walk. This is going to be hard trying to start a new diet and exercise program. But I am determined to do it.

Your attitude to start dealing with your diabetes is impressive. Some people take months and even years to stop the denial and get on with taking care of themselves. I am so glad you found this website and I hope it will reduce your confusion with helpful information. We want the website to be interactive, so feel free to ask questions. Here you have experts, and even more importantly, other people with diabetes, who can help!

Walking Tip No. 9: Know the Signs of Hypoglycemia

When walking, stay aware of your body and how you are feeling. It can be difficult to tell whether you are sweating from exertion or hypoglycemia. Here are symptoms, courtesy of the National Institutes of Health: feeling weak, drowsy, confused, hungry, and dizzy. Other symptoms include paleness, headache, irritability, trembling, sweating, rapid heartbeat, and a cold, clammy feeling. In severe cases, you could lapse into a coma. And remember to always consult your healthcare professional before beginning any exercise program.
