I'm a new diabetic and have a lot of questions and it doesn't seem like my doctor can take the time to answer them all. I'm so glad to have found this website. I hope you can continue to be a resource for me!

Thanks for the kind words about DiabetesCare.net, Robert! But don't give up on asking the doctor questions, OK!?! And if there is anything we can do to make your experience with DiabetesCare.net better (any ideas you have...any at all), reach out to me directly at mike@DiabetesCare.net.

Mike...nice job with this site man...
My mother in law is still dealing with this diabetes...and she's in and out of the hospital now with all kinds of stuff going on. My advice to Robert H. is "get a new doc!" If his doc is "too busy" or doesn't seem to care enough, get another doctor. Robert, as many doctors as I've had in MY life and in caring for my elderly mother in law, if you don't like what's happening with your current doc, simply find someone that DOES care and DOES return calls. Period. If you LIKE this doctor for his/her care, then stay with them...but insist upon getting return calls. YOU must be as PROACTIVE as possible with a diabetic's care...especially if it is about YOU or a loved one. I've learned a lot about this disease and what it can do. Doing NOTHING is the last thing you want to do.

Again...Mike the web genius, nice job. Let's talk.
BE BIG!

I agree with Bigjay! I have been dealing with diabetese for 10 years now and just recently got very serious about it. You need a doctor who is serious about it. Might ask to be referred to an endicronologist if your insurance will let you. But get a doc who will talk and listen!

I agree with Robert as I was just diagnosed with type 2 diabetes back in Jan this year. There is a lot of information out there, but having a support group like DiabetesCare.net makes easier to get "real" life experiences and answers from professionals. So thank you DiabetesCare.net

Side note*** I took my test today for my A1C and I'm anxious to get the results and I also started my "NO more smoking" courtesy of Chantix. I will keep everyone updated on my journey to better health.

Your MD really may not have the time to adequately educate you about diabetes. It's unfortunate, but it may be that current reimbursement guidelines are steering MDs toward volume, not quality.
Realizing this time limitation, many MDs refer their patients to an American Diabetes Association Certified Diabetes Education Program.
Often a hospital offers them.
If your MD doesn't recommend such, you should ask him/her about it.
One important facet of such a program is a lengthy interaction with a registered dietitian (RD) who can take the time to sift through the foods in your diet and explain which ones may need special attention regarding diabetes or the metabolic syndrome. It's a rare MD who has time for such a project.
Plus, if your diet is non-standard or ethnically different, it's probable you'd get the best advice from someone who's specifically trained about food composition, like an RD.
