I just don't beleive it; nobody in my family (that I know of) has diabetes...and I'm not even overweight! Should I get a second opinion or am I in denial?

It's understandable that you would be shocked by this diagnosis. You can have the blood tests repeated and compare the results to the information on this site here. If you have had previous yearly studies, they may show an increasing trend in your blood sugars, which is considered pre-diabetes. Current medical thinking suggests alerting the patient so he/she can make lifestyle changes.

What did any of you think when you were first diagnosed? What would you do differently about how you responded now that you have had diabetes for a while?

In my opinion, diabetes has been overlooked for generations.
Probably due to poor blood glucose testing and lax standards.
If someone in your familie's history had a heart attack or stroke, the odds are significant that there was a diabetes connection.
Diabetes was "under-diagnosed" in the old days, is my take.
