My doctor told me that having diabetes AND high cholesterol AND high blood pressure is a triple whammy...He called it metabolic syndrome. Is anyone else dealing with this? What am I supposed to do now?

Hi Barbara,
Diet and medication are key to managing metabolic syndrome. Step 1: if you are not near your ideal weight, start working to lose weight. Step 2: Limit simple sugars and alcohol, which are big factors in increasing triglycerides. Step 3: LImited saturated fats, and increase monounsaturated fats-you might consider using omega-3 fish oil Step 4 : Reduce your sodium intake Step 5: Get active-regular exercise will not only improve all your numbers, but help you lose and maintain your weight and make you feel better. There are more aggressive dietary maneuvers, but this is a big start. As a dietitian, I see people make changes that make a big difference. You can do this!

The best thing you can do, by far, is lose central fat, aka visceral fat.
But, suffice it to say, beyond the semantics of where the fat is stored, just lose weight.
If you're suffering with the metabolic syndrome, you are also typically insulin resistant. Insulin resistance encourages fat gain and impedes fat loss. Exercise lowers insulin resistance for at least 24 hours, so try to exercise daily. If you're insulin resistant, your insulin levels are chronically high, so don't make matters worse with significant levels of carbohydrate intake.
Generally, keeping your daily carb grams under 100 grams per day, spaced out in 3 -4 meals, will help keep your insulin levels lower, which will allow better use of your fat stores during exercise.
