I was diagnosed with diabetes after being rushed to the ER back in Late Jan. My blood sugar was 1150, I was in the hospital for 10 days and since I've been out by blood sugar levels have not gone over 150 with the exception of two times it was 187 after eating dinner. I am on Novolog and Lantus injections which are fi...ne, painless. My question is when will I have this A1C test and with my sugar being controlled are the odds in my favor for a good result? I'm still learning as there is so much to know about diabetes. At 39 the doctors told me(well 1 doctor) that in about 4-5 years I will be on dialysis which I fear. If my sugar is controlled, why would I have to go on dialysis?

Hi,
Which type of diabetes were you diagnosed with? Sounds like your numbers are in very good control. Your A1C, after 3 months, will be a good indication of the effectiveness of your treatment plan. There is, however, a time called "the honeymoon phase" for the newly diagnosed when glucose control goes well. Without knowing about your kidney function, it is hard to respond to the doctor's comment about eventual dialysis. You could ask more questions of your doctor, and even have a consult with a nephrologist. Having worked in dialysis for 18 years, I know that having a kidney specialist on your team is a good idea. One thing for certain, controlling your blood sugar with diet, exercise, medication and self-monitoring is your best bet for future good health. You could also find a C.D.E., certified diabetes educator, who can work with you over the years. Good luck! Write back if you need more help from any of us on the forums!

Thank you sharon.rd for the info and support. This morning I gave blood for my A1C check and am anxious to get the results. I feel pretty confident though. Also, I started Chantix today to help me quit smoking (yay). I know how important it is for me to quit so I'm excited about it. I'm hoping that once the cigs are gone for good, I will have better control over my blood pressure which has been hard to control. So we'll see.

owilson1970 really needs to post more about the diabetes diagnosis, as sharon.rd asked about.
there's a world of difference in advice for type 1 vs. type 2 diabetics.

Interesting case study though, coming into the emergency room with a blood sugar over 1000mg/dL.
Anecdotally speaking, in my hospital, two people came into the emergency room with similar BGs to what owilson1970 reports (just over 1000 mg/dL).
One was unconscious and the other walked in.
So if you remained conscious .. kudos to you

and just to extend what I've seen in my job.
a patient walked into the emergency room with a BG 2500 mg/dL.
I thought that should be close to the world record, but it isn't.
The world record is held by a male who was hyperglycemic and very thirsty from it.
He drank huge volumes of fruit juice to quell his thirst before going to the hospital.
I'm too lazy to search the results, but suffice it to say, 2500 was quite a bit less than the record.
