We use the Exchange List to categorize foods. See our Exchange list and our Carb Planning tool to learn more. Basically, Fruits, Dairy and Starches ( Grains, Breads and Starchy vegetables) are mostly carbohydrates, and are good for you to eat in reasonable amounts. Each defined serving is 15 grams of carbohydrates. People with diabetes are directed to aim to eat a certain amount of carbohydrates per meal. For example, 45 grams of carbohydrate for lunch would look like this --sandwich ( 2 slices of bread ( 15 grams x 2=30 grams), meat ( 0 carbs) and 1 medium apple ( 15 grams carbs), mayo ( 0 carbs).
YOu could also use food labels and food composition data bases to count carbs. Try our Food Tracking Tool to see how many carbs you are eating a day.
