Beets are so sweet that they really need no seasonings. But if you want to experiment with some new flavors, try this recipe.

What you'll need

  • 3 med beets, peeled and steamed until tender, but still slightly crunchy
  • 1 tsp. lemon juice
  • 1 tsp. honey (optional)
  • 1 pinch sea salt and pepper to taste


  • Step 1
    Steam beets and set aside to cool slightly.
  • Step 2
    Mix lemon juice and honey together over low heat in a 2-quart saucepan until well blended.
  • Step 3
    Turn off heat, slice beets, and add them to the pan. Mix gently.
  • Step 4
    Add sea salt and pepper to taste, and serve immediately.
  • Step 5
    If you are omitting the honey, just slice the cooked beets, sprinkle with lemon juice, sea salt, and pepper, and serve.
  • Step 6
    SUBSTITUTIONS: Use a dash of nutmeg or a bit of ginger instead of the honey to add flavor but no sugar.
