Study: Gene Links Lower Birth Weight and Type 2 Diabetes
By Mike Boyle

With diabetes reaching epidemic levels - an estimated 180 million people around the world now suffer from the disease - researchers say they have discovered two genetic regions that affect a baby`s size at birth and say one of them is also linked with developing type 2 diabetes later in life.

The finding, reported by Reuters and published in the journal Nature Genetics, is said to be the first firm evidence of a genetic link between low birth weight and diabetes and helps explain, the researcher`s claim, why smaller babies have higher rates of type 2 diabetes when they grow up.
